new u2 album...kind of

The big news in the u2 world today is the announcement that a new "definitive Best Of" single-cd album will be released on Nov. 20th. From http://atu2.com:

"U2.Com has announced that U2 will release their third "Best Of" CD on November 20th. The album will contain sixteen previously released tracks and two new releases, one of which is the U2/Green Day collaboration "The Saints Are Coming". According to the story, both new songs were recorded at the recent Abbey Road sessions with Rick Rubin."

The announcement seems to have been met with mixed reviews from fans. It doesn't seem absolutely necessary for the band to release this 3rd "Best Of" record now, but it is always exciting to get new material from the band, and I'm looking forward to hearing that and also seeing what the band views as it's top 16 songs thus far. This album will complete their contractual obligation with Universal Records which stipulated 3 "Best Of" releases, so it will be interesting to see if they are planning a move from Universal.

In conclusion, here is a gratuitous, entirely unrelated photo, taken by my brother at the Oregon Zoo last weekend:

the only thing that disappoints me about the "best of" news is that it makes me think that the studio time with rick rubin was all about getting "one more tune" for this "best of" record rather than a whole album. not that i think this is wrong, or that they won't keep working with rick, but i bet this means no actual new album until 2008.
